About Table Mountain weather

Table Mountain weather is famously unpredictable. Clear skies can turn to thick cloud in under 20 minutes — especially when the south-easter is building in the afternoon.

The south-easter

Cape Town’s dominant summer wind (roughly October to March). A strong south-easter drapes the famous “tablecloth” cloud over Table Mountain. Conditions on the summit can deteriorate rapidly — wind gusts above 600 m are significantly stronger than at sea level.

Winter fronts

Cold fronts arrive from the north-west between May and August, bringing sustained rain, low cloud, and strong winds. Trails become slippery and visibility can drop to near zero. Check the 3-day forecast before committing to a winter hike.

On the mountain

Weather at the summit is always a few degrees colder and windier than in the city below. Carry a wind layer regardless of the forecast, and watch conditions while you hike — not just when you leave.
