Crime awareness

The contour path between Kings Blockhouse and the cave has a documented history of mugging. Do not hike alone — four is the ideal number. Leave valuables at home, avoid quiet weekday hours, and if confronted hand things over without resisting.

Know before you go

  • One of Table Mountain's largest caves — 50m wide, visible from De Waal Drive.
  • Views from inside over Cape Town, Table Bay, and Lion's Head are exceptional.
  • In winter a small waterfall cascades over the cave entrance.
  • Start before 09:00 to catch shade on the exposed upper section.

If you need help

Security incidents on the lower contour path are well documented. The cave itself is used by homeless individuals as shelter — hikers report a smell of urine and occasional uncomfortable encounters inside. Hike early in the morning.

Emergency exit

Descend from the contour path down the zigzag path toward Devil's Peak parking on Tafelberg Road. From Rhodes Memorial start, return the way you came.

Cell reception

Good near Rhodes Memorial. Drops on the upper contour path.

Start point

Rhodes Memorial parking area — path leads up via Kings Blockhouse (most common). Alternatively: end of Tafelberg Road near the Devils Peak parking.
