Bare granite turns lethal when wet — stay off the domes in rain, mist or strong wind. The chain on Bretagne Rock's steep section is an aid, not a guarantee.
Know before you go
- The second-largest granite outcrop in the world after Uluru, with Boland views from both domes.
- Entry about R48 per vehicle plus R16 per person at the gate.
- An early start beats the inland heat — the granite radiates by mid-morning.
If you need help
Slides on wet or lichen-covered granite are the incident pattern, usually on the descent. Rescue access is straightforward — the domes sit close to Jan Phillips Drive.
Emergency exit
Retreat to the parking below the rock — nowhere on the circuit is more than about 1 km from the road.
Cell reception
Good on the domes, patchy behind them.
Start point
Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve — parking below Paarl Rock off Jan Phillips Mountain Drive
Parking: Parking below Paarl Rock. Jan Phillips Drive is gravel but fine for any car.

Best time of year
Spring and autumn are kindest — summer bakes, winter rain makes the granite a no-go.
