Newlands Forest Trails
Mugging incidents have been reported in the forest — hike in groups and avoid quiet early mornings or late afternoons alone. Stay on established paths; the plantation forest has many unmarked tracks that lead nowhere.
Know before you go
A popular local network of shaded paths through pine and eucalyptus plantation. Connect to the Contour Path for access to Devil's Peak and the broader Table Mountain trail network. The forest roads are wide and well-used on weekends. Go with others.
Rescue history
Relatively low-risk for physical injury. Security incidents are the primary concern — this is a known hotspot for opportunistic crime in the forest.
Good for most of the forest. Drops on higher routes connecting to the Contour Path.
The forest has multiple exit points to Rhodes Drive and the surrounding suburbs.
