Cape Point
Lighthouse Keeper's Trail
Cape Point is one of the windiest locations in the national park. Extreme gusts occur with no warning, particularly on the exposed cliff edges around the old lighthouse. Do not approach cliff edges in strong wind. Wildlife warning: baboons are persistent here — do not feed or make eye contact.
Know before you go
SANParks entry fee required for all vehicles entering Cape Point (cash-free, card only). The old lighthouse at the top has been operational since 1860. The new lighthouse below is still active. The Flying Dutchman funicular provides a powered descent option. Baboons are present throughout — secure all food.
Rescue history
Most incidents at Cape Point involve vehicle break-ins rather than trail emergencies. The baboon population is highly habituated to humans — never leave food in your vehicle or pack.
Good near the parking area. Drops on the exposed southern headlands.
Return to the parking area. The Flying Dutchman funicular provides an alternative descent (ticket required).
