Critical warning

The cableway frequently closes in high winds — if this happens you must descend on foot. Many rescues involve hikers who have exhausted themselves on the ascent and cannot safely descend. Budget for the descent before you commit to the top.

Know before you go

The most accessible ascent of the Twelve Apostles range. Morning shade makes this a good summer option — start early. The Diving Board viewpoint at the top is one of Cape Town's most photographed spots. Route to the cable car from the summit requires a long traverse — allow extra time if planning to descend by cable car.

Rescue history

Falls on the descent are the most common incident type. At least one helicopter hoist rescue has been carried out on this route. Hikers carried down have been reported in WSAR callout records.

Cell signal

Spotty above the Pipe Track. Improves near the summit plateau.

Emergency exit

Return down the gorge the way you came. The Pipe Track at the base provides a safe, level exit to Kloof Nek.

Access point

Theresa Avenue, Camps Bay (jeep track) or Kloof Nek parking (Pipe Track)
