No dogs Parking Reserve entry — about R25 adult, R15 child, plus a small vehicle fee

The reserve gate locks at closing time — an afternoon start risks being locked in. The upper ridge has short scrambling sections with drop-offs; turn around in strong wind or cloud.

Know before you go

  • A well-managed, patrolled reserve — one of the safest big climbs near Cape Town.
  • Confirm gate hours at entry and set your turn-around time from them.
  • The Protea and Woodland routes below the peak make good shorter alternatives.

If you need help

Heat exhaustion on the shadeless middle slopes is the common callout. The summit ridge catches the full south-easter — wind has knocked hikers off their feet near West Peak.

Emergency exit

Descend the ascent route. Below Disa Gorge the reserve's lower path network offers quick, sheltered ways back to the gate.

Cell reception

Good on the lower slopes, patchy in the upper kloof and on the ridge.

Helderberg Nature Reserve main gate, Helderberg Farm Road, Somerset West

Big shadeless ascent — start at gate-opening in summer. The ridge is savage in a south-easter.
