Helderberg Nature Reserve
Helderberg Nature Reserve Trails
The West Peak and Dome routes above the reserve boundary are managed by CapeNature, not the City of Cape Town. These upper routes are for experienced hikers only and are significantly more demanding than the in-reserve trails. The Reserve itself closes at 17:30 in winter and 20:00 in summer — do not be on the mountain when the gate closes.
Know before you go
Owned and managed by the City of Cape Town, with the Friends of the Helderberg Nature Reserve providing significant community support. Eight colour-coded trails ranging from 2.2km to 7+ hours. Entry fee payable at the gate. West Peak summit offers exceptional views over Somerset West, False Bay, and the Cape Peninsula. Guided hikes run regularly throughout the year — contact the reserve directly.
Rescue history
The reserve itself is well-managed and has low incident rates. The area's designated emergency number is WSAR: 021 937 0300, as displayed on the reserve's own safety signage.
Good within the reserve boundary. Spotty on upper routes managed by CapeNature above the reserve.
All in-reserve trails are colour-coded and circular, leading back to the main visitor centre and gate. The Brown Route (Watsonia) is the only non-circular route — it is an out-and-back trail.
